Jason's Lucky Streak Ends! - Thursday, 08 May 2008 20:56 EDT

It had to happen.  We knew it.  The judges knew it.  And finally Jason knew it.  He was eliminated this round, leaving Syesha and the Davids to fight it out for the big prize!  What will happen next week?  I am more and more impressed by Syesha...can she make it to the final two?  Will David C shave or stay shaggy?  And will David A's angelic voice prevail?...  I can't wait for more Idol entertainment!  See you next week for answers to these questons and many more!

Song Choices People! - Wednesday, 07 May 2008 7:10 EDT
The final four sang two songs each tonight.  All I can say is "Song Choice People"!  and "What was Jason Thinking??"  David C opened the show with "Hungry Like A Wolf".  It was not particularly engaging and didn't go down well with the judges.  His second song was "Teenage Wasteland" and was done well -- a really solid rock song. I have to say I didn't like his unshaven, shaggy look that much tonight - I think he is trying too hard for the rock look.  Syesha's first song was a Tina Turner classic and was stunning!  The wardrobe department has been paying attention and she wore a fabulous gold shift dress that really completed her performance.  Syesha's second song was a Sam Cooke classic that was done beautifully.  Unfortunately Randy didn't like it.  Paula and Simon loved it and Syesha got teary because it was so meaningful to her.  A genuine moment.  Jason stuck to the "Bobs" - Bob Marley and Bob Dylan.  And did neither of them justice really.  He also made THE faux pas of forgetting the words to "Hey Mr Tambourine Man".  Big mistake.  Simon summed it up by saying "Pack Your Bags".  I think Simon might be right.  Finally David A. brought his A game, so to speak!  His first song was "Stand By Me".  A perfect song choice, done really well.  David A's second song was THE classic Elvis hit "Love Me Tender".  A very, very big risk to take.  But it paid off.  David did his own version that was true to the original, but brought his own touch.  There is something about David A's vocal quality that is so appealing.  The judges loved him tonight and Simon (again) summed it up with, "You didn't just beat the competition tonight, you crushed the competition".  Will the next elimination be as obvious as it seems??

Bye Bye Brooke! - Sunday, 04 May 2008 5:15 EDT
In case you missed it, Brooke was farewelled on Idol this week!  No big surprise there - it had to happen soon!  So now we are approaching the pointy-end of the competition!  What will Idol bring next week?  Will it be a show-down between David & David in the end?  Tune in next week to see!

Neil Diamond Night! - Wednesday, 30 April 2008 7:56 EDT
The final five contestants sang from Neil Diamond's song book tonight.  This was pretty cool in a retro kind of way I thought!  The show brought a full hour of entertainment with each Idol contestant singing two songs each.  Some were well known covers, others less so.  Highlights I thought were David A doing  an R&B version of "Sweet Caroline" and David C doing a cool acoustic "All I Really Need Is You". I know the Davids appeal to a completely different viewer, but I think they are both great performers with potential.  Jason C. did some sweet covers of "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "September Morn".  Unfortunately Simon thought they were 'forgettable'.  I just think it is because Jason keeps it simple.  That said, it does seem that Jason has not brought anything new in the last few weeks.  Syesha covered "Hello Again" and "Thank the Lord for the Night-time" very well.  She demonstrated her strong vocals and attractive stage presence.  She is securing her place for another week or two I suspect!  Finally Brooke did some beautiful covers, notably on "I Am, I Said".  Nothing over-the-top, but a good performance to keep her in the running.  What did you think?... Get your comments on our "BUZZ" section on the homepage here by writing on your group page!!  For elimination night you just have to pick ONE contestant to go for our game.  Good luck!

Change in voting: Only pick who will go! - Sunday, 27 April 2008 5:46 EDT
Idol threw a curve at us last week by only having a bottom two.  It always happens about this time in the competition, but usually when it gets down to 5 contestants.  Anyway, from here on in only pick who you think who will be voted off.  Based on who has gone the past couple weeks, that will prove difficult enough!

Carly Goes Home! - Friday, 25 April 2008 4:11 EDT
The bottom two this week were Syesha and Carly.  In the end Carly was eliminated.  I was a little surprised.  She has such a strong voice and can do almost anything vocally.  But I guess it shows that the public are not voting purely on voice, there is something more.  And unfortunately for Carly, she just didn't have it.  This leaves us with only 5 contestants!  3 guys and 2 girls.  It is looking more and more likely that the final Idol will be a guy...but who knows, this show isn't always that predictable!  See you next week for more Idol entertainment!

The Final 6 Embrace Musical Theater! - Wednesday, 23 April 2008 8:06 EDT

If you were ever a fan of "Cats" or "The Phantom of the Opera" you would've enjoyed tonight's Andrew Lloyd Weber theme.  If you weren't a fan, then you were in for a long night!  Most impressively the contestants had the chance to meet the man behind the songs and receive his personal coaching.  What an incredible opportunity for any singer.  Syesha opened the show with a great performance of "One Rock and Roll Too Many", using the big band brilliantly.  I thought she was stunning and right in her niche. Next up Jason attempted "Memory".  His white suit was almost as bad as his performance, which (as Randy said) was "a train wreck".   It was not good, and Jason seemed out of his depth.   Brooke was next up singing a beautiful song "You Will Love Me" and showed her vulnerable, emotional side.  However she did commit a serious singing faux pas by stopping after a few bars and having to start all over again.  Paula (surprisingly) was totally unforgiving about this and caned her for it.  Next was David A who did a pop-rock version of "Think of Me".  It was a skilled performance that went down well with the audience and the judges.  Carly was up next with "Jesus Christ Superstar".  Vocally she was very strong, but somehow she's missing the x-factor.  I can't pin it down...but she just doesn't connect on a level with the audience.  Finally David Cook closed the show with the well-known "Phantom" song "Music of the Night".  A big, big song to take on ...and David did it justice.  The judges were thoroughly impressed!  A good finish to the evening of entertainment!  Hats off to the Idol producers for taking a risk on this musical theater theme.  Good to see the singers really stretch themselves.  I think it will help sort out the voting for this week!  Get your picks in before elimination!

Finally! - Thursday, 17 April 2008 1:27 EDT
I knew the 'Vote for the Worst' crowd could only keep her in for so long.  It seemed everyone gave up on Kristy-Lee going this week. Brooke, Carly, and Syesha were the favorites to get booted  Low scores again this week for most people.  It will only get harder to pick in the next couple weeks I fear!

Mariah Mentors the Top 7! - Wednesday, 16 April 2008 8:06 EDT
A whole evening of Mariah Carey, I don't know whether to laugh or cry!  Actually I confess that I quite enjoyed this show! David A opened the evening with a beautiful ballad, typical of his classy style.  As Randy pointed out, "if you can sing, you can sing anything". Carly was next up with strong vocals singing "Without You".  I loved it!  The judges didn't. Syesha was next with a solid attempt at a big Mariah song, but the judges were not completely sold. Brooke followed with an unplugged version of "Hero".  A big song to take on with a lone piano.  I think Brooke was foolish to turn down the opportunity to sing with an orchestra for such a big number!  Paula pointed out that Brooke missed a few notes and rushed her performance.  Simon made a funny analogy to a burger missing the meat!  Despite this I think Brooke remains well-loved (by me anyway) for her honest and simple approach to her music. Kristy Lee followed with a country style song - not too bad, but nothing to write home about. David Cook did a new arrangement of "Always Be My Baby", which received a standing ovation from Randy!! I still miss Michael.
Jason C closed the show doing a folkey, laid-back Mariah song.  Randy likened it to spending a night at a beach luau!!  Harsh!  (but Paula and Simon both liked it funnily enough).  How do we vote now?!  Tune in for the elimination show  to see what happens next!

Update: sorry I messed up the order earlier.  Shuffled my notes before I typed them up!

What the? - Friday, 11 April 2008 5:43 EDT
Michael Johns’ Idol journey ended this week.  I can’t really believe it.  Carly and Syesha were also in the bottom three.  But Michael Johns was voted off.  That’s right:  Kirsty Lee will be singing next week, but Michael Johns will not.  I have nothing else to say.  Check out our American Idol buzz page for other responses while I recover from the shock.
